Sedangkan kebatilan pada Surat Al-Baqarah ayat 42 adalah keterangan dusta yang mereka ada-adakan. Sementara kebenaran yang mereka sembunyikan adalah sifat Nabi Muhammad SAW. “Jangan kalian sembunyikan” sifat Muhammad SAW. “Padahal kalian menyadarinya” bahwa itu adalah sesuatu yang hak, tulis Imam Jalaluddin. Tindakan demikian itu, kata Imam Al-Baidhawi, lebih buruk karena kesalahan orang yang tidak tahu masih dapat dimaklumi. Imam Al-Baghowi dalam karya tafsirnya Kitab Maalimut Tanzil fit Tafsir wat Ta’wil mengutip sebagian ahli tafsir yang mengatakan, “Jangan kalian campur agama Islam dengan ajaran Yahudi dan Nasrani.” Imam Muqatil mengatakan, Yahudi mengakui sekaligus menyembunyikan sebagian sifat Nabi Muhammad SAW agar mereka dapat dibenarkan dalam hal ini. Ia mengatakan, “Jangan kalian mencampur kebenaran yang kalian akui dengan kebatilan yang kalian sembunyikan.” Kebenaran yang dimaksud adalah penjelasan mereka atas sebagian sifat Nabi Muhammad SAW. Sedangkan kebatilan adalah tindakan penyembunyian mereka atas sifat Nabi Muhammad SAW lainnya. Surat Al-Baqarah ayat 42, kata Imam Al-Baghowi, berpesan kepada Ahli Kitab, “Jangan kalian menyembunyikan sifat Nabi Muhammad SAW. Padahal kalian mengetahui bahwa Muhammad adalah nabi utusan Allah.” Imam Ibnu Katsir dalam tafsirnya mengutip Abul Aliyah, Surat Al-Baqarah ayat 42 berpesan kepada Ahli Kitab agar tidak mencampur yang hak dengan yang batil dan meminta mereka untuk menyampaikan nasihat yang benar kepada hamba-hamba Allah yang menjadi umat Muhammad SAW. Imam Qatadah, kutip Ibnu Katsir, mengatakan, Surat Al-Baqarah ayat 42 berpesan kepada Ahli Kitab untuk tidak mencampur ajaran Yahudi dan Nasrani dengan ajaran Islam. Agama Allah adalah Islam. Sedangkan Yahudi dan Nasrani adalah bid’ah yang tidak berasal dari Allah. Muhammad bin Ishaq, kutip Ibnu Katsir, meriwayatkan dari Ibnu Abbas RA, Surat Al-Baqarah ayat 42 berpesan, “Jangan kalian menyembunyikan pengetahuan perihal utusan-Ku dan kabar yang dibawa olehnya yang ada pada kalian. Sedangkan kalian menemukan pengetahuan itu tercatat pada kitab-kitab suci yang ada di tangan kalian.” Imam Mujahid, As-Suddi, Qatadah, dan Rabi’ bin Anas, mengatakan, kebenaran yang disembunyikan oleh Ahli Kitab Madinah pada Surat Al-Baqarah ayat 42 ini adalah sifat-sifat nabi akhir zaman yang dijanjikan Nabi Muhammad SAW.
